There has spring up heated discussion as to whether firecrackers should be banned in cities.

As a traditional way to celebrate the new year, quite a few people miss firecrackers a lot. They believe that firecrackers have become a part of Chinese culture. Lots of funs will be gone with the banning of firecrackers. But firecrackers have brought about far more undesirable effects. For example, firecrackers often cause many serious problems, such as big fires, environmental pollutions and even casualties. On New Year’s Eve， in particular，the deafening noise of explosions accompanied with stingy choking smoke usually drive one mad. One cannot have a moment of peace and quiet. To make the matter worse, children like playing carelessly with firecrackers. There also exist potential hazards in manufacturing, shipping and storing them.

True, to change a custom is not easy, and people are not ready for such drastic actions, but it will pay in the long run if the setting off of firecrackers is effectively banned in cities.
