It would be extremely distressing for me to divulge that there is ultimately one person who has had the greatest impact on my life because there have been several who have helped to make me the person I am today. One thing all these people have had in common, however, is how they demonstrated their sincere love to me in one way or another. That has helped shape my faith and my understanding of what life really is to me.

By piecemeal, in my eyes arises a figure, bigger and bigger, clearer and clearer. She, in a simple and magic way, taught me about grace, strength, and dignity when I was a little bairn. She, in the season for gathering corps, was diagnosed with liver cancer shortly before my last year of college. She, with a faint smile on her face, passed away just at the eve of my wedding. Never once did I hear her complain about the cards she'd been dealt, never once did she show that she felt sorry for herself, and never once did she lose faith. She as an ordinary pipsqueak showed more strength and grace than anyone I've ever known.

How I would have loved to have had more time with her but she left me, with some of life's greatest lessons: love deeply and passionately, give more than you take, and always believe that you are very special---not because you are better but because you are the best.
