Dante Alighieri

Dante Alighieri is a great poet in the late middle Ages; he also is the pioneer of Renaissance. Engels said that “Dante was the last poet of Medieval Age and he also is the first poet of New Era.” His masterpiece Devine Comedy was praised as “the epic of Medieval Age”.

Brief Introduction

He was born in Florence in 1265 and died in Ravenna in 1321. He was born in a decline noble family. His mother died when he was five or six years old, his father was a merchant and did not concern his children. The only love Dante got was from his elder sister. Dante married with Gemma Donati in 1277 and the couple had at least three children. He was an active politician, but the party he took part in was failed at last and he was exiled to Ravenna in 1302. He stayed there until he died in 1321.

Dante was a great writer and poet, he had many works. In his works, he shows a concern for inward experience and the subtle shades and variations of human nature. His work reveals the darkness of the middle Ages and shows his anxiety about his country and fate of the people. At the same time, his works reveals the dawn of the new Era. So Engels praised him as “the last poet of Medieval Age and the first poet of the new Era”.

Major Works

His first work New Life was appeared in 1293. New Life was a lyrical poetry anthology that he wrote to his love. The book included 31 poets which he wrote to Beatrice, his Goddess. In this book, we can see Dante’s love and his suffering after Beatrice’s death; we also knew Dante looked love as a religious power which can save mankind. This poetry is one of the most important works of “gender”at that time.
