AbstractEf cientnitrogenacquisitionandallocationareimportanttoenableplantstosuccessfullycompeteforlimitedand uctuatingnitrogensourcesinthesoilandsustainvigorousgrowth.Overthepasttwodecades,severaltypesofnitrogentransporters,suchasnitratetransporters,ammoniumtransporters,andaminoacidtransporters(Frommeretal.ProcNatlAcadSciUSA90:5944–5948,1993;Tsayetal.Cell72:705–713,1993;Ninnemannetal.EMBOJ13:3464–3471,1994),havebeenidenti edusinggeneticapproachesorfunctionalcomplementa-tioncloninginyeast.Inthisreview,wefocusonthephysiologicalfunctionsandin uenceofplasmamembranenitrate,ammonium,andaminoacidtransportersas质膜revealedbythepowerfulmoleculargenetictoolsavailableforinvestigatingArabidopsis.

1Introduction

Nitrateandammoniumaretwomajornitrogensourcesfornonlegumeplants.Forassimilation,nitrateisconvertedintonitritebynitratereductaseincytosol,andthentransportedintoplastids/chloroplasts,andconvertedintoammoniumbynitritereductase.Nitratetakenupbyrootscanbeassimilatedimmediately,storedinvacuoles,transportedtoshootstobeassimilated,orstoredintheabovegroundparts.Tobedistributedintothesedifferenttissues,nitratemustbetransportedacrosstheplasmamembraneofseveraldifferenttypesofcells.

Thereareseveralsourcesofammoniuminhigherplants:(1)acquisitionfromsoilsolution,(2)generationfromnitrateassimilation,(3)generationbyphotores-piration,and(4)exportfromaN2-fxingbacteroidtotheplant.DespitebeingY.-F.Tsay(*)andP.-K.Hsu
